Prakara, in Sanskrit, means ‘wall’ or ‘enclosure’ and refers to the walls that enclose the temple complexes in India. The temple complexes quite often have more than one wall enclosing them; at the temple of Sri Rangam in Tamil Nadu, there are seven enclosures to the temple that envelop the whole city. Madurai is another example of a multi-walled temple, as is Tiruvannamalai.

During the Prakara Utsav (utsav means ‘festival’), the deity is brought out from the sanctum sanctorum and paraded along the perimeter of the prakaras, to view the domain over which they preside. There are usually special murtis, or icons, made for this type of a festival, called ‘utsava murtis’. At the Broome Street Temple, the Prakara Utsava is performed once per month, on the fourth day after the new moon, a day sacred to Ganesh, this month the festival will be held on Monday, May 17th. It is a special and joyous festival, being the only time that the deity is brought out from the sanctum for everyone to enjoy.

Please join us if you can, for abhisheka, prakara utsava, and kirtan.

Dear Students and Friends,

This weekend marks the one year death anniversary of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. We will be observing his passage with prayers and pujas.

In the Hindu tradition, when a soul departs from the body, it remains in an intermediate state, called a preta, neither material, nor fully formed in a spirit body. The family of the departed performs offerings and prayers for twelve days in order to build a spirit body for the departed so that they can travel to the realm of the ancestors. After the 12th day, the preta becomes a pitri, an ancestor. The journey takes one year, and each month offerings are made to feed the hunger and thirst of the soul of the spirit body. The monthly offerings are called shraddha.

On the twelfth month, they reach the pitr loka, the realm of the ancestors. It is a very important day, and a very important culmination of the entire death journey. In India, Guruji’s family will be making all of the necessary and appropriate offerings to their ancestors over the next three days. We will observe here with chanting and prayers that will joyously support his final transition.

Please join us as much as you can at the following times:
Thursday 6-8 pm
Friday 6-8 pm
Saturday 5-8:30 am

Thank you very much. All of your friends and family are welcome.
